Tech Mahindra may launch BPO unit in Philippines

With the acquisition of Satyam Computers in last April, Tech Mahindra has taken the responsibility of restoring the company and at the same time expanding its BPO space. The company is considering starting a new BPO operation in Philippines.

Tech Mahindra has contact centers in Northern Ireland and UK. This will be the company’s third offshore contact centre. If this plan works out the company will be giving competition to companies like Wipro and Infosys who have already established BPOs in countries with low-operating cost.

The IT major has already entered into outsourcing industry in UK and European Union (EU) by establishing contact centers in Belfast and South Tyneside. Now it is planning to venture into Philippines to serve the global telecom clients in the Asia-Pacific (APAC) and North American markets.

According to the news source of ET, Philippines is most likely to make deal with Tech Mahindra as the company’s blue-chip North American clientele is learnt to be comfortable with the voices and accents of English-speaking Filipinos operating in the BPO industry. However the company is not ready to reveal its expansion strategies related to BPO space.

The company did not comment on queries regarding the plans for a third BPO unit in Philippines and the required investment.

According to some sources the company is planning to model the new centre along the lines of its existing contact centres in Belfast and South Tyneside. They have plans to recruit round 400-500 people in the coming months for the company’s business in Asia-Pacific.

Tech Mahindra has five contact centres in India across Kolkata, Chandigarh, Noida, Pune and Chennai. The contact centres in Chandigarh, Noida and Pune primarily serve the clients in North America and Europe unlike its recent contact centre Kolkata. Chennai serve some telecom companies in APAC region. The company does not serve markets like China, Japan, Australia and New Zealand.

Tech Mahindra’s total BPO head count is expected to rise to 6500, once the BPO operation in Kolkata becomes full-fledged. Presently the company has 5000 employees in its contact centres and an additional 500 in the offshore contact centres.
