Orange to retain its Indian BPO unit

Close on the heels of reports over job cuts by British Telecom and how these could impact the Indian BPO industry comes news of a positive kind from another telecom giant Orange of the UK which has clarified that it had no intention of moving its call centre operations out of India.

Published media reports quoted a company spokesperson to state that Orange had no intention of pulling out of India as it was committed to working with its partners in the country.

The report in Live Mint said that Orange outsources its back-office and support functions to two companies in India - Convergys Corp. and IBM - with the former carrying out back-office operations and the latter running the tech jobs.

The fear of closure in India stemmed from a report carried by 'The Independent" of Britain that quoted Orange's CEO Tom Alexander as saying that it won't be long before its call centres for customers would be run locally in Britain.

The newspaper quoted the spokesperson as admitting that the CEO's comments were in tune with their announcement made in June relating to having customer services within the UK, but emphasised that this did not mean that a Orange was coming out with a new policy on outsourcing.

It may be recalled that earlier this year, Orange had consolidated its outsourcing with Convergys and IBM Daksh while ending two contracts with 24/7 Customer and ExlService Holdings. Analysts have been pointing out that companies were moving voice based services back to base on the perception that this was critical for retaining customer base.
