HR Managers have crucial role in recession

Nasscom chairman Ganesh Natarajan has asked human resources managers to perform the role of a lighthouse and not get carried away by the effects of the global economic meltdown.

In a keynote address on "The Role of HR in Trying Times" organized as part of the annual conference of the Pune Chapter of the National HRD Network here recently, Natarajan said in the tough times, the HR managers must act as advisors to the CEOs.

The tough economic situation prevailing in the United States and Europe would never get replicated in India as this country will continue to see growth, albeit in a moderated fashion, the Nasscom chairman said adding that during such a scenario, the HR Manager should not play "yes-man" to the CEO, instead they should try to curb impulsive decision-making.

Speakers at the conference also advised against HR managers going for a hire-and-fire policy in India as aping the west would only take away the credibility of an organization as the Indian workers are not comfortable with companies that do not take care of their employees.

Maharashtra Council chairman of Confederation of Indian Industry and Cummins Generator Technologies Pradeep Bhargava held the view that HR managers should differentiate between purchase orders and hiring orders. HR managers should work towards creating a vital bonding between the company and the employees and ensure that it is kept strong.
