Gurgaon, India’s fast growing BPO hub, known for housing some of the best IT firms and a large number of BPOs, could soon earn the distinction of being the cyber crime capital of the country, a media report said.
Cyber security experts say Gurgaon is far ahead of Delhi and Mumbai in cyber crime. Gurgaon witnesses at least 40 cyber crime cases every day, only 10 per cent of which gets reported.
The city’s cyber crime cell has in fact registered only 120 cases since January this year, says cyber crime lawyer Pavan Duggal.
A report published in the Times of India quotes Duggal as saying that the burgeoning infotech sector is to blame for the rise in such crimes.
Duggal has had a number of BPOs from Gurgaon complaining of such offences, which vary from identity theft to data theft.
Cyber crimes in the BPO and IT sector are serious issues as a company’s sensitive information could be at stake.
The offender usually steals inside information from one company and sells it off to a rival organization for a hefty profit, said Duggal.
Such crimes are not usually reported as it exposes the company’s security loophole and damages its reputation. The police are also not considered qualified enough to handle such cases.
