Premji’s dream university to be launched in July

The Azim Premji University, the dream project of the Wipro chairman, is likely to become operational in July.

The university, which will focus on the education and development sectors, will offer three MA programs in the first year, said the Azim Premji Foundation, a not-for-profit organization under whose aegis the varsity is coming up. These will be in education, teacher education and development and will be of a two-year duration.

Candidates must have a bachelor’s degree and would have to undergo a written test and an interview. The all-India entrance test will be held in 38 centers in the country on April 17.

The university would take in a total of 2,000 students in the first year. This would be increased to 2,500 in the fifth year, said Anurag Behar, the co-CEO of the Azim Premji Foundation.

The university will have a 100 acre campus off Sarjapur Road, which is expected to be ready in 18 months, says a report in Business Standard. Until then, it will function from a rented nine-storied building near Electronic City in Bangalore.
